Painting Furniture

There is a new phenomenon sweeping the country. Have you heard of it?

It’s called UPCYLCING and its changing the way people see their furniture, their homes and in some cases their lives, as more and more people turn their hobby into a career. That’s exactly what I did.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Aileen Hogan and I am originally from Dublin. I am married with two small children, three dogs, one donkey and a horse and now live in a small village near Borrisokane Co Tipperary. I am what is now known as ‘An Upcycler’

I take pieces of furniture, sometimes old and neglected, sometimes just dark and dreary, but always of good quality and I transform them using paint and many other techniques.

I started by painting my own pieces when I really couldn’t afford to replace them and when my friends and family saw how I made ‘orange pine’ bedroom furniture look like it was bought in Laura Ashley, they all wanted me to paint theirs.

And so my little business was born. Two years ago, I moved into a shop in our local town of Borrisokane, which I use as a base to bring the growing ‘Shabby Chic’ community together and introduce the value of saving old tired furniture to the local population.

Now I am very busy giving

  • Teaching Upcycling in both individual and group workshops
  • Giving demonstrations to local women’s groups , which are very popular
  • Supplying all the necessary products needed to other upcyclers around the country who visit my website

Now you have my story and you can see my pretty little shop, which won the best kept shop front in the Nenagh area, let me share a little of how you upcycle. It easy when you know how…and I will show YOU every month here at The Finest.

Just Imagine Being Able To:

  • Transform your tired old kitchen at Fraction of the cost of a new one
  • Create a new brighter look for your ‘PINE’  bedroom
  • Take your Mothers old beloved ‘China Cabinet’ and give it a new lease of life, so  now it actually suits your home
  • Enjoy a new inner calmness and positivity gained through the process of painting
  • Achieve what you thought was beyond your reach and turn your hobby in to a business. A business that can actually earn you a living!

Here is an example of a Before and After. Some of you might recognise this.

This is a Supervalu blanket box that a customer brought into the shop one day. It had been in her children’s play room for years and rather than throw it out, she wondered could I do anything with it as so she could use it in her bathroom for extra storage.

It painted up so well, and transformed so quickly that I I could have sold it ten times while it was waiting to be collected by the customer.

Yes there were pen marks and scratches on the top and it was very tired looking, but a few hours later ( and that’s all it took ) have a look at how it looks now.

You can do this too. And every month I will take you through the process, starting next month with how to prepare the furniture before you pick up the paint. Follow me step by step in this monthly feature and you will be Upcycling in no time at all.

If you cannot wait until or you are already painting and would like to learn new techniques and see new products, then you can pop into the shop to see us.
